So. You doubt there is a God. How can you believe in a God you cannot see? How can you be certain God exists?
Think of what you know exists but cannot see. Electricity. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi streaming signals spiraling magically through space, through your roof and walls, your car, your TV, radio, headphones, earbuds, cell phones. Thoughts. Memories. Dreams. Wind. Gravity. Love. No doubt these matters exist in an untouchable ghostlike realm because we experience their presence.
The disciple John says “God is a Spirit and we must worship Him in Spirit and in truth. . .” ~John 4:24. The truth is, we cannot see God. God is shrouded in mystery. Why does God exist? Why do we exist? But we do, exist. I do not doubt I am alive, living, breathing, existing, here, now. John writes “All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.” ~John 1:3
So. You are still not sure you can believe in God because you can’t see God? Unplug your TV. Turn off the radio, disconnect your satellite, your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Stop calling, texting. Stop thinking, remembering, dreaming. Stop feeling the wind on your face or hearing the flap in your sails. Try going to the moon without a rocket booster. Stop loving or being loved. See how far that gets you in life.
Try calling on God the next time you lose your way or things fall apart. Experience seeing with faith, not by sight. Without God, there is no hope here or hope hereafter. God can exist without you. But can you exist without God?
I choose to believe, but that doesn’t prevent me from doubting. John recorded Jesus speaking to his doubting disciple, “Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed; blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” ~John 20:29.
Lord, I want to believe. Help my unbelief.
